Day of Action Background
United Way Day of Action is an invitation for people and organizations around the world to LIVE UNITED and take action to address a variety of challenges. Each June, communities around the world come together to harness the volunteer spirit and improve the conditions in which they live. It is a day that we ask you to help us put our mission into action by volunteering to improve the building blocks for a good quality of life – education, financial stability and health.
Little Free Pantry (LFP)
“Give what you can, take what you need.”
Little Free Pantries are part of a grassroots movement to engage everyday people in fighting food insecurity among their fellow neighbors. These pantries are not a solution to food insecurity or food deserts, but they do provide easy and anonymous access to food and basic need products.
“In the U.S., the Covid-19 crisis pushed an additional 13.2 million people into food insecurity, a 35% jump from 2018.”
As part of our annual Day of Action we invite our community to be a part of this movement to nourish our neighbors through building and sponsoring your own Little Free Pantry.
For a list of shelf-stable products and other non-perishable goods that we are collecting, click here to find a printable list.
Once you register we will reach out to you with additional information for your activity (ie: building plan samples, links for ideas/resources, timelines, locations, pantry drive list of needs).
We have established June 18th as the installation day (times TBA) for our established locations. June 1st – June 14th will be the official pantry drive/products timeline.
Last year during Day of Action so many of you joined us to bring some joy and happiness to one of the most vulnerable and secluded populations during COVID, our seniors.
It was a great experience for volunteers and the feedback from our retirement communities was amazing. With that in mind we plan to continue working with this population again. We will be working with local senior communities to paint birdhouses to place around the grounds. We have opportunities to paint with residents and outdoor socially distanced painting.
Join us on June 19th from 10am-2pm (lunch provided by a generous sponsor) for a paint party at Melrose Park Shelter or June 25th to help install the birdhouses at South Roanoke Nursing Home from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM and Richfield Living from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM. All you need to bring is your creativity (and some clothes you don’t mind getting messy), we’ve got the rest!

Your Dollar Can Do It
As our fiscal year comes to an end, every dollars does count. A simple safe way to join us in taking action on June 18th is to give.
