School Supply Drive is Underway, as United Way of Roanoke Valley & Rocky Mount Walmart “FILL THE BUS”

Walmart’s “Fill the Bus” event is an annual school supply drive, ensuring that every child in the community has the literal tools they need to succeed in school. Drop bins are now available for donations from the Franklin County community at the Rocky Mount Walmart Supercenter at 550 Old Franklin Turnpike.

The bus will be parked at the store on Friday, August 3, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and individuals and businesses are invited to come out and fill it with school supplies. Supplies most needed include pencils, pens, paper, notebooks, 3-ring binders, twin pocket folders, zippered pencil pouches, gallon and quart-sized plastic baggies, markers, crayons, rulers, tape, glue sticks, backpacks. For around $20 you can fill a backpack with all the items a child may need.

“We are in the 19th year of our Fill the Bus program, making it one of our longest campaigns. It is so rewarding to know that the children in our community will have what they need to start their school year ready for success,” said Susan Farris, Human Resource Director and Community Involvement Manager for the Rocky Mount Walmart. “The community has always been there with us to support this event, and we look forward to really making an impact again this year.”

Last year, more than 5000 items valuing $11,000 were donated to the Fill the Bus effort, giving kids the confidence and supplies they needed to succeed at school.

All items received at the Rocky Mount Walmart will remain in Franklin County to be distributed by school officials to children in every school in the county.
