Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the United Way of Roanoke Valley! Here you will find information about Day of Action 2020 and the many ways you can be involved.

COVID-19 certainly made planning volunteer projects a challenge. Thanks to the creativity and ingenuity of the staff here at UWRV, we planned activities that are both impactful and safe for everyone involved.

Day of Action 2020 is unlike anything UWRV has attempted before, and we’re excited to offer virtual volunteering projects as part of this year’s program!

This year’s theme is B.E. United! The volunteer projects were designed to Benefit and Engage our senior citizen community.  To learn more about each project, see below for information and how to register.

Day of Action Background

United Way Day of Action is an invitation for people and organizations around the world to LIVE UNITED and take action to address a variety of challenges. Each June, communities around the world come together to harness the volunteer spirit and improve the conditions in which they live. It is a day that we ask you to help us put our mission into action by volunteering to improve the building blocks for a good quality of life – education, financial stability and health.

Due to weather, we are rescheduling some dates for our activities. Please see below and follow us on social media for more updates!

Positive Palettes

Let’s decorate some windows!

Positive Palettes offers local nursing home and care facility residents a new view on the world.  Even a lovely view grows tiresome when it doesn’t change…you will provide that necessary change with a few strokes of a paintbrush on their windows! If you’re the next Picasso, can’t draw a straight line with a ruler, or fall somewhere in the middle, all levels of artistic talent encouraged to participate!

We’re inviting people from all over the Roanoke Valley to submit a video (no longer than 90 seconds) showing off their skills. Join us to be part of this collaborative effort to do something special for our Golden-agers.

Greeting Card Collection

Because everyone likes receiving mail!

We all know how an unexpected card or letter can brighten up any day. This is especially true for our neighbors living in senior care facilities that may be missing their families and loved ones during this time.  Let’s work together to light up the valley with messages of love, happiness, and support through letters and homemade cards. Get creative with your cards, or if you need inspiration, we have coloring sheets here that you can download, print and decorate. Finished cards can be dropped off or mailed to the UWRV office and will be delivered to Senior citizens throughout the Roanoke Valley.

Be sure to share your creations on Facebook, Instagram and Tiktok! Use #UWRVSendingSunshine , #UWDayofAction & #BEUnited

Cards must be received by June 26th
