About the COVID-19 Community Response Fund

United Way of Roanoke Valley’s COVID-19 Community Response Fund is an essential and forward-looking approach to supporting the stability of our region’s families, both during and after the coronavirus pandemic.

The fund supports the work of area nonprofit partners providing direct services to families in areas including access to food and supplies, healthcare, childcare, housing, utilities, employment and transportation.

The COVID-19 Community Response Fund is designed to complement the work of public health and government efforts, by expanding local capacity to address all aspects of the outbreak as efficiently, and effectively as possible. We anticipate multiple phases of funding to address both the acute, immediate needs as well as the longer-term impacts of the outbreak and recovery.

We will provide support for partners working with the immediate and emerging unmet needs of families as fundraising results allow.

Geographic Scope: Cities of Roanoke and Salem, Counties of Craig, Botetourt, Franklin, Roanoke, and Salem, and the Town of Vinton

FAQs

How much of the money raised will actually go to the nonprofits who are directly helping residents in need across the region?

100% of your donation goes directly to non-profits helping response and recovery efforts on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic in the local Roanoke Valley region. We encourage you, as you determine your giving level, to include an additional $1.50 to cover transaction fees.

I’m an individual who’s been affected by COVID-19. Can this Fund help me?

United Way of Roanoke Valley is working to quickly divert resources to community partners that are directly supporting local residents and families who are most affected by emerging health, economic, and social impacts.

The Fund is not able to provide direct grants to individuals, rather, it is supporting community-based organizations that have expertise in efficiently providing people and families with services and support

My organization is interested in resources from this Fund. Can we be considered?

We understand the COVID-19 outbreak is impacting nonprofits in many ways, including increased demand for their services, lost revenue due to closures and cancelations, and other challenges.

Based upon the charitable structure of the COVID-19 Community Response Fund, our grants are limited to 501c3 nonprofit organizations, groups fiscally sponsored by a 501c3 nonprofit organization, or other charitable organizations able to receive a tax-deductible contribution, such as schools, faith-based organizations, and other public entities. We are not able to fund individuals or businesses directly, labor unions, or other 501c4, 501c5, and 501c6 organizations.

I want to donate. Can I restrict my funding to a specific community organization?

To ensure we move resources as efficiently as possible and respond to those most in need, we are not considering restricted donations at this time. The COVID-19 Community Response Fund was created in hopes of providing a way to coordinate as many resources as possible.

Should I give to this Fund instead of making other donations?

The COVID-19 Community Response Fund is in no way intended to be the sole vehicle of providing much-needed resources in the community. Rather, the Fund helps facilitate access to getting more targeted resources to the community. This is a critical time for so many, including the nonprofit organizations who’ve benefited from your giving in the past, as well as those who’ve had to cancel their annual fundraising events at the same time being called to provide more services.

Is there a geographic area of focus for the Fund?

The COVID-19 Response Fund will prioritize community-based organizations serving the Roanoke Valley region comprising the Cities of Roanoke and Salem and the counties of Roanoke, Botetourt, Franklin and Craig.

When will you share who you fund?

Fund recipients by phase will be posted online within 5 days of award. Reports on how funds are being used by recipients will be posted online within 60 days of award and shared with donors who give to the fund.
