Loaned Executive Program

The Loaned Executive Program is a professional development program that is critical to United Way’s continued success in meeting the Valley’s growing needs. Each year, businesses dedicated to making a difference in our community commit to sponsoring the program by lending employees or providing sponsorship funds for the 12-week period of the fall campaign.

Those who choose to invest in this program make it possible to educate many more people about the positive impact they can make through United Way.

How The Program Works
• A Loaned Executive (LE) is a carefully selected, high potential individual from a local business who is assigned to work full time with the United Way of Roanoke Valley’s annual campaign.
• The best example of the LE candidate is one who shows promise of being a top management person -- one who, through daily contact with community leaders, will benefit from training and exposure to the corporate and/or small business world.
• While working with United Way of Roanoke Valley, LEs receive intensive training in management and organizational skills, sales, marketing, public relations and public speaking, communications and United Way fund-raising and corporate gift concepts.

Training Opportunities
• Loaned Executives undergo a one-week interactive training course which focuses on presentation and sales techniques, telephone use, customer service, and project and time management skills.
• LEs also receive ongoing support and mentoring from United Way staff while cultivating and managing accounts.
• Responsibilities include functioning as liaison to Roanoke Valley corporations, executives and campaign coordinators.
• LEs may also make presentations to employees about health and human services programs.

Benefits to the Loaned Employee

• The challenge of assuming new and different job responsibilities in a new environment for a limited time.
• The opportunity to develop or sharpen skills in public speaking, personal selling, marketing, planning and management.
• Developing a relationship with volunteers and corporate executives who actively support the United Way of Roanoke Valley’s mission.
• Increased awareness and understanding of the delivery of human services to family, friends and co-workers in the Roanoke Valley.

Benefits to United Way and Our Community

• Organizing a team of exceptional, trained representatives who can effectively share information about United Way’s mission, goals, and objectives with executives and other interested supporters.
• Improving effectiveness from the volunteer leadership and professional staff while keeping operational costs to a minimum.
• Introducing talented people to the many volunteer opportunities throughout the United Way system.
