Memo to all applicants

Local nonprofit organizations that are not United Way partner agencies can receive designated gifts through the community campaign if they hold eligible agency status. Only agencies that meet requirements for 501(c)3 status and are registered as such with the State of Virginia can apply.

In addition. an application and review process exists to verify that agencies meet qualifications including:

  • Services provided by the agency must directly benefit human beings, whether those recipients are children, youth, adults, the aged, the ill and infirm or persons with mental or physical disabilities. 
  • Services must consist of care, research or education in the fields of human health or social adjustment and rehabilitation; relief for victims of natural disaster and other emergencies; or assistance to those who are impoverished and in need of food, shelter, clothing and other basic human welfare services.

  • The agency must document specific health and human services as outlined above and provided to residents of Alleghany, Bedford, Botetourt, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, or Roanoke Counties, the cities of Roanoke or Salem or the Town of Vinton.

  • The agency must substantiate local presence by having a publicly identified business office or contact point located in the Commonwealth of Virginia (preferably in Alleghany, Bedford, Botetourt, Craig, Floyd, Franklin or Roanoke Counties, the cities or Roanoke or Salem, or the Town of Vinton), professional or volunteer staff regularly available for contact during normal working hours, and a telephone number publicly advertised throughout the year and available to the citizens of the area.

  • The agency must provide opportunity to all individuals without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability or veteran status in all personnel actions, including retirement, evaluation, employment, promotion, transfer, training, compensation and termination.  Agency services are available without discrimination in accordance with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

  • The primary focus of the agency must not be one, or a combination of the following, which are not considered direct health and welfare services: legal advocacy, political advocacy, sectarian activities, activities relating to natural resources/wildlife, environmental management or policy.  This list is illustrative only and not exhaustive of the types of activities that are not direct human health and welfare services.
