Public Invited to Check United Way Vision

United Way of Roanoke Valley invites the public to a June 20 meeting to review and discuss local human service needs and ways to improve our community.

Billed as a Community Conversation, the event is from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the American Red Cross Roanoke Valley Chapter, 352 Church Ave. SW in downtown Roanoke. Reservations are required due to limited seating, assigned on a first come, first serve basis. Call United Way at 777-4202 or e-mail kbranch@uwrv.org.

“This is an invitation for people to help your local United Way apply resources and efforts to make the greatest positive impact on our future,” said Kathy Graves Stockburger, Board of Directors Chair. “We want to share the latest data and let people respond as a way to develop mutual understanding of our most pressing human needs and ways to strengthen the Roanoke Valley.”

The meeting is one of five stakeholder gatherings to examine results of a 17-month Vision Council study to refresh United Way strategic funding priorities. Some 200 local volunteers reviewed regional human service data and consulted with providers and civic, government, and business leaders to develop funding guidelines for United Way investments in its four impact areas:

  • Helping Children and Youth Succeed
  • Strengthening Families
  • Improving Health and Self-Sufficiency
  • Promoting Quality of Life for Older Adults.

United Way of Roanoke Valley engages more than 30,000 volunteers to support a shared vision and mission to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of people in our community. In 2006, contributions of $6.3 million were raised to help support a network of 61 human service programs operated by 27 local United Way partner agencies. Since 1924 United Way has grown to serve people in Roanoke, Salem, Vinton and Botetourt, Craig and Roanoke counties.
