Local Students Volunteer with UWRV
from Upward Bound at Roanoke College

Three local Upward Bound students contribute volunteer time and effort to United Way of Roanoke Valley. Three rising seniors, Jasmine Terry (William Fleming), Kieshawna Green (Patrick Henry), and Ste’Keira Hayes (Northside), devote two hours of community service every Monday to United Way.

Upward Bound is a TRIO program for potential first generation college
students. The program serves high
school students from low-income families to students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree. Upward Bound provides mandatory instruction in math, laboratory science, literature, and foreign language. It also
offers mentoring programs, tutorial service, academic and financial counseling, fee waivers, information on post secondary education opportunities, and assistance in completing/preparing for college entrance exams and financial aid applications. The program successfully prepares students for college and allows them to experience college life.

Terry, Green, and Hayes each work on various tasks while volunteering at United Way. Some of these tasks include scanning and filing documents, labeling envelopes, and updating the United Way web page. Like Upward Bound, United Way helps children succeed for life and has had a very positive influence on the three volunteers.
