Carroll Honored as Leader In Early Childhood Care

Sandra T. Carroll, who is to retire in February after 38 years with Greenvale School, was honored with a lifetime achievement award at today’s annual meeting of United Way of Roanoke Valley.

Carroll, executive director of the school since 1981, helped Greenvale become the region’s largest nonprofit childcare provider, today serving 350 children. Its sliding fee scale makes Greenvale a valuable community resource, with many of its served families struggling against significant barriers to stability and prosperity.

Under her leadership, Greenvale School saw significant achievements, including establishment of the Get Well Center, the first daycare facility in southwest Virginia for ill children. Partnering with other United Way agencies enabled the school to offer onsite speech and hearing tests and therapy, as well as intergenerational programs like foster grandparents. Facility expansion, extensive volunteer support and participation in United Way Success By 6 are other notable features of Carroll’s tenure.

Members and officers of the 2005 Board of Directors for United Way of Roanoke Valley were elected during the annual meeting. James N. Hinson of BB&T Bank will serve as board chair and Tom McKeon of the Roanoke Higher Education Center is vice chair.

Barry Henderson of SunTrust Bank was elected to serve as 2005 campaign chair, with Harold McLeod of Wachovia named vice campaign chair. Zomparelli, as outgoing board chair, becomes board development chair. Lee Wilhelm was elected treasurer.

New board members include: Pierre Dionne, Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc; Karen Grogan, NBC Bank; Marcus Hamilton, Cooper Industries Crouse-Hines Division; Marilyn S. Humphrey, Cox Communications; Harold McLeod, Wachovia Bank; Sabine O’Hara, Roanoke College; and Barton J. Wilner, Entre Computer Center.

Members elected to the executive committee, in addition to officers listed above, include: Ed Garner, Audit Committee Chair; Mike Dittrich, Marketing Chair; Kathy Stockburger, Community Impact Chair; Cheryl Hilton, Community Investment Chair; Rudy Austin, Policy Committee Chair; and Jim Ford, Planned Giving Chair.

Chosen as Executive Committee At Large Members are: Dana Ackley, Beth Doughty, Vic Gilchrist, John Heitz, Bill Lee, Ed Murphy, Melinda Payne, Ann Richardson and Danielle Yarber.

Awards of appreciation for board service were presented to Dr. Wayne Harris, retiring after six years of board service, and Jim Ruhland, who served for three years.

United Way of Roanoke Valley serves residents of Roanoke, Salem, Vinton and Botetourt, Craig and Roanoke counties with a network of human care programs operated by 27 partner agencies. Its mission is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of people in our community.
