United Way Annouces F. Wiley Hubbell and Community Builder Award Winners

ROANOKE, VA—The United Way of Roanoke Valley has awarded Douglas C. Waters the prestigious F. Wiley Hubbell Award and Ann Richardson the Community Builder of the Year Award.

The Hubbell award recognizes an individual whose outstanding volunteer management, leadership talents and services are rendered to the United Way of Roanoke Valley. The criteria include a history of significant service to United Way of at least five years; to have given of an identifiable, specific talent or service; and to have contributed to a particular project, goal or process of importance to United Way. Waters guided United Way of Roanoke Valley when long-term president Bob Kulinski left to head the United Way in Akron. He chaired the search committee that brought CEO, Frank Rogan to the Roanoke Valley and chaired the board in 2001. While at Bank of America, his leadership garnered United Way of Roanoke Valley over half a million dollars over a five-year period for improving the lives of children in our valley.  The initiative is Success by 6, and it provides innovative solutions to help our community to pull together to address the needs of young children.  Waters is active on many community boards and committees.  He currently is Vice-President for Finance an Administration at Hollins University.

The Community Builder Award recognizes an individual who exemplifies community building principles such as encouraging broad community participation to solve problems, focusing on strengths and measurable results. Richardson became involved in United Way in the early 1990s as an allocation volunteer. She was instrumental in the reinvestment in Venture Grants in 1997 and has continuously served on that committee since that time.  She has been a committed supporter of Outcome Measurement and helped all of the United Way funded programs successfully move to full outcome measurement reporting as part of their application process. Since 2000, she has simultaneously served as the Chairperson of Community Building, as well as on community investment panels, the Policy Committee, the Venture Grant and Neighborhood Grant committees, the Board of Directors and as a campaign volunteer.  She has been an integral part of the process of moving United Way of Roanoke Valley to investing in key impact areas, including the very successful Success By 6 Program, the Individual Development Account Partnership with TAP and the 2-1-1 Project with the Council of Community Services.  She works at R&K Engineering and at Elaine Stephenson Interiors.

United Way of Roanoke Valley supports more than 79 health and human service programs in Roanoke, Botetourt, and Craig counties, and the cities of Roanoke and Salem, and the town of Vinton.  The organization’s mission is to unite people and resources to improve lives.
