Emergency Food and Shelter Program

The Federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program helps nonprofit and government agencies provide shelter, food and supportive services for the nation's hungry, homeless, and people in economic crisis. Expenditures are limited to food, meals, shelter, rent/mortgage assistance, and utility assistance.

For 2007, over $54,000 in federal funds was distributed to nonprofits in Roanoke City, Roanoke County and Craig County by the Local Emergency Food and Shelter Board. United Way of Roanoke Valley administers the Local Emergency Food and Shelter Board. The board is responsible for:

Advertising funds availability;
Establishing priorities among community needs
Allocating funds to nonprofit and govenment emergency food and shelter agencies; and
Helping monitor program compliance.
